Mothers Day Weekend In Boston With Children

This is part 2 of my Mothers Day weekend that started in Burlington, Vermont. We flew in and out of Boston. I knew we wanted to spend a few days in Boston because we used to live here before we had our daughter. There are so many baby-friendly and toddler-friendly activities in Boston. It is the perfect place for a weekend getaway!

Driving in Boston is never really that easy because of the traffic and the way people drive. My husband is used to it after living there for over 3 years, so driving to the city from Vermont wasn’t too bad. Also it was a Sunday morning on Mothers Day weekend.

Getting Around Boston with Kids

While in Boston, we mostly walk or take the public transportation, otherwise known as the T. Getting on the trains with strollers is super easy as long as it is not a crowded train. Typically, train cars are only crowded after big events get out, such as sports games. Just look for the handicap accessible train cars and roll the stroller right on.

Same goes for the buses. For a long time we did not take advantage of the bus routes in Boston and stuck to the trains. However, in our experience, the buses are actually really nice.

Where We Stayed In Boston with Kids

When we lived in Boston we were located in the West End near TD Garden. This is the area we knew we wanted to stay again for the two nights we were back. We decided on Hotel Indigo Boston Garden and a 1-Queen bed suite with extra living space. We knew rooms wouldn’t be very big in the city so we splurged a little with the extra living space. The hotel is conveniently located close to everything we had planned.

Fenway Park with Kids

Once checked in, my husband went to return the rental car and we got ready to ride the train to Fenway Park. We had tickets to go to the 1:00 p.m. Red Sox game. This was going to be our daughter’s first game at Fenway. (Our son had visited a couple times before we moved)

For Mothers Day, Fenway was giving out small clutch like bags with the Red Sox logo on them. I thought this was really neat and additionally I ended up getting three of them. I have a post about taking young kids to Fenway Park if you would like to read here.

Side note for Fenway, they have a nice little nursing room for you and your little babies, so do not be afraid to take them with you!

From the game, we had slightly different plans for the remainder of the day. My husband and son were going to hit the double sporting event and see the Bruins playoff game. I mean how often do people have this opportunity? My daughter and I on the other hand were going out to dinner with a friend and her daughter for dinner.

TD Garden

As I didn’t go to the Bruins game, I received plenty of pictures and a recap from my husband. They went into the TD Garden early so that they could get some food before. My son got a slice of pizza that was almost as big as he was. The game was really exciting and my son was on the edge of his seat the whole game.

We knew the game was going to be loud, so we made sure he wore headphones the entire time inside the arena. He still talks about the hockey game to this day!

Dinner With the Girls in Boston, MA

Italian food in Boston can’t be beat! In our opinion it is as good as in Italy. We have never had a bad meal at any restaurant in the neighborhood called the North End. Or outside of it for that matter. We ended up at Lucca for dinner. I got the ragu based on the waiter’s recommendation and it was so good! I cannot pass up tiramisu if it is on the menu. It was so delicious!

Things to do in Boston with a Baby and a Toddler

Our last full day in Boston we had two things on our mind. Playgrounds for the kids and Lobster Rolls.

Playgrounds in Boston

Let’s talk about the playgrounds first. We went to two different places during the day each being a great time for our kids. The first one we went to was the City Hall Plaza Playground that is a newer playground. This playground was under construction when we moved from Boston so it was exciting to see the finished product.

The next playground we stopped by after dinner in the Seaport part of Boston. It is called Martin’s Park, in honor of Martin Richard who passed away at the Boston Marathon tragedy. The playground has a large boat area as well as some other things for the kids to play with.

Boston Lobster Roll Restaurants

Whenever we visit Boston there are 3 food groups we try to stick to. Pastries, Italian, and Seafood. My husband is a huge fan of Lobster rolls so we dedicated the last full day to having a couple of these.

Neptune Oyster Boston

Our first stop was Neptunes which is located in the North End and is a small restaurant known for oysters and lobster rolls. Just a heads up, you cannot make reservations. Occasionally, such as when they first open, you can put your name on a list and come back. Usually, you have to stand in the line and wait for a table to open.

I would not say this place is very kid friendly as they do not have high chairs and they pack people into the restaurant. We did it anyway but it is because we have been there before and we knew what to expect. However, we knew exactly what we wanted to order. We got in and out as quickly as we could.

Row 34 Boston

For dinner we went to Row 34 which is a bigger restaurant in the Seaport area and you are able to make reservations at this restaurant. They also have high chairs for kids and in my opinion it is family friendly. We always make early reservations though if we are taking the kids with us.

The lobster roll was spectacular. I do feel like I would go with Row 34’s over Neptune’s if I had to decide between the two. Both places use a healthy amount of lobster meat so you won’t feel cheated.

Their menu also gives you a little bit more of a selection.

Boston Airport Playground

We had an early flight out of Boston, so even though we usually would train to the airport, we decided to Uber this time. Do not be too concerned about getting to Boston Logan too early with children as they have a little playground. Our kids love running around here and burn some extra energy before getting onto the plane.

The overall Mothers Day weekend trip was everything I could ask for. Even though it was jam packed with activities and sites to see, I never felt overwhelmed or like we were doing too much. Boston is such a kid-friendly city. There is no shortage toddler friendly activities in Boston!
