Johns Island is a growing community in the Charleston area. With close proximity to downtown Charleston and the sea islands such as Kiawah, it is a great spot to stop for food while in Charleston. Some Johns Island restaurants are duplicates of downtown Charleston hit restaurants while others are making a name for themselves and drawing tourists out to the island.
Kiss Cafe
First up on the list, Kiss Cafe is open for Take out or Dine In. It is closed on Mondays. On other weekdays (Tuesday-Friday) it offers commuter specials around $10 for take-out that vary day to day.
Take out offers bagel sandwiches that look amazing! Also pastries including muffins that my son was begging for as we waited for our food.
Eat in offers full service. There is a covered patio, indoor, and outdoor tables in front of the restaurant.
We enjoyed hot coffees as we waited for our food. They had crayons and a coloring sheet for my son while we waited. Also, the hostess was nice enough to bring a highchair for my son.
I had the mushroom lovers omelet which was delicious! The toast came already buttered which was a huge help. Too busy wrangling my kids to take a photo!
Minero
Minero is a Mexican restaurant with a generous covered outdoor dining area for those who want to be outside without being in the sun. There are also tables completely outdoors for those who want to fully enjoy the weather. The outdoor area is a great area for those with kids as there are corn hole boards available.
We ate in the covered outdoor area on a chilly night. They had the heaters on and we were perfectly comfortable. There are also fans for the warm, summer days that are right around the corner.
There are high chairs available for those with kids. There is also a kid’s menu and crayons provided. My son enjoyed the cheese quesadilla. The kids entrees do not include a side but those are available for an additional fee. However, I found that the quesadilla was more than enough for my toddler.
I enjoyed the Veggie Minero Burrito Bowl because I am *trying* to choose more whole food options. I liked that all the ingredients were in a separate spot so I could mix them to my liking. Unfortunately, I did not get any food pictures because I was busy with my kids and visiting with friends. Next time!
My husband enjoyed the House Margarita. They offer them frozen or on the rocks. They do not have a broad wine selection, just a few offerings. The focus is definitely on the margaritas.
The Southern General
The Southern General is a cozy restaurant on the end of a shopping center off Maybank Hwy on Johns Island. My favorite part of our meal there is that every side comes with cucumber salad as the side. Great way to incorporate some veggies. The sandwiches are delicious!
However, be mindful of the hours as it is closed on Sundays and only open during peak dinner hours Tuesday through Friday.
The poutine is delicious but not as good as Canadian poutine if you have had it. Not bad for US poutine though!
Johns Island is a growing community and I’m sure more delicious restaurants will pop up as the area continue to grow. What are your favorite Johns Island restaurants?
